Abstract

ABSTRACT - Roberto Gaja (1912-1992) was one of the most remarkable Italian diplomats who came to prominence after the Second World War and played a relevant role in ensuring the start-up of the European process. Like his colleague and rival Roberto Ducci, he championed Europe as the only political future for Italy on the international scene. His major hope consisted in the creation of a European nuclear capability within the Atlantic Alliance but this proved to be too premature for the times. RÉSUMÉ - Roberto Gaja (1912-1992) a été l’un des meilleurs diplomates de la première génération qui a eu des responsabilités considérables dans la construction européenne. Convaincu, comme son collègue et rival Roberto Ducci, que l’Italie n’avait pas d’avenir politique en dehors de l’Europe, il a également poursuivi de façon lucide mais sans le succès qu’il souhaitait l’objectif d’un pilier nucléaire européen en relation étroite avec l’Alliance atlantique.
