Abstract

ABSTRACT - The theocratic pupulism that has now ruled Iran for almost thirty years represents an attempt to turn back the clock, a development which does not correspond to the history of a Persian people traditionally aloof from the many great games in the region, nor to the present state of a civil society manifestly tolerant, adaptable and vibrant. By promoting an islamic fundamentalism that has spread far and wide, and now claiming a national right to a nuclear capability and interfering in the internal situation of many neighbouring countries, the Islamic Republic could be considered an historical accident at a strategic cross-roads of East and West. Such a reversal could in the end become unsustainable with respect to the increasing international responsibilities and opportunities that world events could instead attribute to the Iranian government, as well as counterproductive for the very national interests that the mullahs so forcefully assert. The regime seems to be out of breath, with glaring contradictions between the official ideal society and the real mood of a population patiently resigned.
