Abstract

Over the course of the Seventies, the determination of the cost of labor per unit of output () has become increasingly important, not only as a key element in the analysis of the evolution of competitiveness, but also as a key to understanding and interpreting certain structural aspects. The conclusions of some comparative studies on the cost of labour have linked the evolution of the internal economic system as a whole with its position in the international economy. However, they have suffered from obvious and significant limitations since, referring to the average of very different sectoral situations, they do not consider the specific imbalances which call for structural economic policy interventions. The present study, based on the initial results of a research by sector and business units conducted by the Commission of the EEC, aims to contribute to overcoming these limitations with a comparative analysis of some of the most significant sectors of the Italian economy.
