Abstract

The article historically reconstructs the experience of export finance in the United States. The US case provides an apt illustration of the problems of adapting existing institutions to the requirements of a changing situation. The author considers the structure and organisation of the Export-Import Bank and other early export financing facilities, as well as the inadequacies of these structures. The author concludes that the facilities currently available in the US appear more satisfactory for longer-term credits while European institutions seem superior as far as short and medium-term credits and guarantees are concerned.
