Abstract

The paper deals with digital currencies and their use in private, not regulated, payment systems. These are based on a decentralized ledger, free from central banks or other financial intermediaries. With regard to the Bitcoin, one wonders if it could be an alternative to the existing means of exchange, highlighting some critical aspects of its transfer scheme. Recent developments suggest that this cryptocurrency meets financial motives rather than payment needs, conflicting with its initial purposes.
