The work deals with the process of international bank lending and with the policy implications for monetary management. The author argues that foreign bank credit expansion has (or is likely to) become an important monetary factor. The macro and micro aspects of the dynamics of the process of this expansion and the relation to the US balance of payments deficit are analysed. Some general remarks are made with respect to the need for intensified international monetary cooperation.
