The author sees signs that the European Community is entering a phase of steady economic growth, with inflation under control and a favourable outlook for exports. However, these assumptions are dependent on other trading nations getting a firmer control over their domestic fiscal and monetary policies. In particular, the US federal budget deficit will remain a problem, as will the continuing balance of trade surplus in Japan. The major problem for the European countries will remain unemployment.
