Abstract

In March 1957, the Federal Reserve published the results of a broad study of the role of consumer instalment credit in the American economy. Because of its nature, the study is most valuable for the insight it provides into the nature, growth and mechanism of consumer credit as it has come to exist in the United States today. It does not draw any conclusions or call for any specific action; it is concerned with isolating and describing the anatomy and physiology of consumer credit, not with pathology and therapy. The present article summarises the most significant features of consumer credit in the contemporary American scene.
