The article provides an in-depth analysis of medium term export finance, using the European experience to highlight problems as well as potentialities and prospects. The first part of the study is devoted to the background, the characteristic problems and the general institutional features of medium term export finance. Its emphasis is more with economic analysis than with description. The second part of the study is comprised of three case studies: Great Britain, France and Germany offer a variety of approaches and problems that cannot be discussed on purely theoretical lines. In the concluding section, the author presents a set of views on the goals of export finance and on the means for achieving such goals.
