Abstract

The article deals with the conditions and the results of industrialisation in Southern Italy, and the limitations on its further progress. Some background on the “Southern problem” and the necessity for industrialising the Mezzogiorno are first provided. The author then examines both the subjective and objective problems involved in industrialisation. Questions regarding the method of industrialisation are also analysed, including location, industry type and private versus public enterprise. The author concludes by looking at the implications of recent policy developments.
