The article examines the protection of workers against the risks of invalidity and old age on a national scale in Italy. The author begins by offering historical background on the subject and the move from the principal of “insurance" to that of “social security”. The war and post-war crisis in social insurance is then reviewed. The reform of 1952 and its technical features are then analysed. Finally, statistical data on the pensions paid in 1952 are provided.
