Abstract

The article reviews a recently published Italian book: G. Di Narni, Le Banche di Emissione in Italia nel secolo XIX, Tornino, U.T.E.T., 1953, pp. 436. On the basis of the analysis, the author briefly summarises the vicissitudes of Italian banks of issue up to the organisation of the Bank of Italy in 1893, and illustrates the difficult process of centralisation of the note issue, which ended only in 1926 when monopoly powers were conferred on the Bank of Italy.
