Abstract

The paper gives a comprehensive statistical survey of the movements of Italian foreign trade from 1881 to the present day, illustrating certain fundamental aspects of Italian economy and its international relations. The analysis brings out clearly the process of industrialisation within the country, the changes in the standard of living of its people, the effects of the autarchic policy pursued in the years preceding the second world war, and the dislocations that have taken place in the sources of supply and the outlets for production.
