Abstract

ABSTRACT - In his Lectio doctoralis at the University of Augsburg, the Author, who has been governor of the Bank of Italy, president of the Italian Council of ministers, president of the Italian Republic, recollects his European experience throughout the twentieth century, giving a message of hope to the younger generations. Educated to the idea of Europe by the best culture of his time and by the thought of the founding fathers, deeply convinced of the need to overcome national confrontation in Europe, he inclined to be a pro-European actor several times during his professional life and particularly when he was governor of the Bank of Italy, looking after the development of the process toward a common European currency. Today, sitting in the Italian Senate, he is in favour of prompt, general ratification of the Lisbon treaty and for the future he advocates a stronger cooperation between Germany and Italy to invigorate the European integration process. RÉSUMÉ - Lors de sa Lectio doctoralis à l’Université de Augsburg, l’Auteur, qui a été gouverneur de la Banque d’Italie, président du Conseil des ministres italien, président de la République italienne, se souvient de son expérience européenne tout au long du vingtième siècle pour transmettre un message d’espoir aux générations plus jeunes. Eduqué à l’idée européenne par la meilleure culture de son temps et par la pensée des pères fondateurs, profondément convaincu du besoin de dépasser la confrontation de nations en Europe, il inclina à être un acteur pro-européen plusieurs fois pendant sa vis professionnelle et particulièrement en tant que gouverneur de la Banque d’Italie, quand il veilla à ce que le processus de développement de l’intégration monétaire vers la monnaie unique fût mené à bien. Sénateur à vie, il plaide aujourd’hui pour une prompte et générale ratification du traité de Lisbonne et, se penchant sur le problème de la reprise de l’intégration européenne, il fait appel à une plus forte coopération entre l’Allemagne et l’Italie.
