(Peri)urban crossings: A mobile geocritical reading of Riportando tutto a casa by Nicola Lagioia and L’ubicazione del bene by Giorgio Falco
The present contribution proposes a “mobile geocritical reading” of the novel Riportando tutto a casa by Nicola Lagioia (2009) and the short stories collection
L’ubicazione del bene by Giorgio Falco (2009). Through a geoliterary approach, the analysis aims to contribute to the recent ongoing debate around the representation of (peri)urban space in contemporary Italian “territorial prose”, on the one hand, and to the broad interdisciplinary field of geohumanities, on the other.
Referring to the concept of the «novel as a geographer» by Marc Brosseau (1995), and to the geocritical and «geo-centred» approach to literature by Bertrand Westphal (2009), the paper reads both the works by Lagioia and Falco as mobile cognitive maps of contemporary (peri)urban spatialities. Moreover, grasping the suggestion by Eric Prieto (2011) to focus on the literary representation of spatial practices, the paper focusses on the practice of “auto-mobility” and its textual transpositions. The “auto-mobile” gaze is interpreted as a privileged perspective to read both real and fictional urban spaces, due to the deep influence of automobilities on the shape of modern urban spatialities and on our spatio-temporal perception. The car as a «mobile chronotope» (Peterle, 2016) further traces a diachronic and geographic line, which connects Lagioia’s narrations of the city of Bari in the 80s with Falco’s depiction of contemporary periurban spaces in Milano.

L’ubicazione del bene de Giorgio Falco (2009). A travers une approche géo-littéraire, l’analyse vise à contribuer d’une part au récent débat sur la représentation de l’espace (péri)urbain dans la «prose territoriale» italienne contemporaine, et d’autre part au vaste domaine interdisciplinaire des geohumanities.
Se référant à la notion de «novel as a geographer» (roman comme géographe),
de Marc Brosseau (1995), et à l’approche géocritique et «géo-centrée» à la littérature de Bertrand Westphal (2009), cet article donne une lecture des oeuvres de Lagioia et de Falco comme des cartes cognitives mobiles des spatialités (péri)urbaines contemporaines. En outre, en saisissant la proposition d’Eric Prieto (2011) d’analyser la représentation littéraire des pratiques spatiales, l’article se concentre sur la pratique de l’«auto-mobility» (auto-mobilité) et ses transpositions textuelles. Le regard «auto-mobile» est interprété comme un point de vue privilégié pour lire en même temps les espaces urbains réels et fictifs, en raison de l’influence profonde des
«auto-mobilités» sur la conformation des spatialités urbaines modernes et sur notre perception spatio-temporelle. La voiture comme «chronotope mobile» (Peterle, 2016) trace ainsi une ligne diachronique et géographique qui relie les récits de Lagioia sur la ville de Bari des années 80, avec la représentation de Falco des espaces périurbaines contemporains à Milano.
