Abstract

One of the main issue of the 20th century was the interest of art in
city and urban development. This interest was re-launched after September
11, event representing a black hole for artists and collective imaginary. The different languages of art have a deep relationship with city and its dwellers. Art is able to understand the complexity of city and metropolis and to investigate the different relations between its dwellers. The artists address the contradictory nature of city, its unstable balance, the ongoing tension between the high speed of communication flows and the un-reality of places, involving local and specific identities. The artist help us in finding how to put together the events of history and how to rethink the today’s living.

L’intérêt de l’art à l’égard de la ville et de son développement de
plus en plus complexe a été l’un des sujets pricipaux du XXe siècle. Ce
n’est pas par hasard si on constate un nouveau regain d’intérêt dans les
grandes expositions internationales après le 11 septembre, véritable
trou noir dans l’imaginaire collectif et individuel des artistes. L’art, en
tant que pluralité de langages, se met en relation donc avec la ville et
les individus qui l’habitent. Il est à même de saisir tant la complexité de
l’ensemble habitatif –ville puis métropole- que les interactions des individus qui l’habitent. Les artistes perçoivent la contradiction de la ville
moderne, son équilibre instable, en tension perpétuelle entre la vitesse
du flux de communication et l’irréalité d’un lieu où les identités spécifiques
et locales s’affirment et en même temps nous suggèrent des raccomodages possibles conditionnant les plis de l’histoire et rendant possible le ”maintenant” de notre vie individuelle et collective.
