Abstract

The AIIG and the SGI joined to the UNESCO Week of Education for
Sustainable Development initiative “Waste: reduction and recycling”,
held in Italy in the week from November 10th to 16th 2008 and promoted
by the Italian National Commission of UNESCO, to support the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). AIIG and SGI took part in that initiative by organizing the conference “Waste responsible management. A challenge for the sustainability
of territory”. This theme is a topical subject of territorial and environmental management: in a framework of incessant growth of resource
consumption, probably no one territorial community is in safety.
The conference showed that the problem is not (only) a management
or technical challenge, but an environmental education is need
for all the components of society (schoolchildren and adults, but also
members of the public administration) in order to accomplish a social
shared objective of waste prevention. This issue could be also a challenge
for geography, which could have a significant role in better analyzing
the different territorial contexts, to promote participated and
shared solutions, towards a sustainable and long-term waste and resources
policy, in which every part of society takes a responsible role.
