Abstract

This article focuses on a variety of early Twentieth century literary stances that can fall under the umbrella of “rappel à l’ordre.” Within this tendency, the Ronda’s neoclassic normalization was far removed from the positions of Piero Gobetti’s Baretti. Gobetti and his very young associates, such as Eugenio Montale, reject avant-gardes’ self-advertising reckless attitude and combine tradition with the acquisition of a “new European style.” Montale’s “Stile e tradizione”, which can be considered as an ideal preface to Ossi di seppia, rejects the Ronda’s restrictive notion of classical antiquity and expresses the need for a reconciliation between the authority of classics and European modernity. The irreverent rondista Savino, on the other hand, impresses the myth of non systematic classical antiquity on the prose of the modern world. Ungaretti’s “Verso un’arte nuova classica” also attempts to lay the foundations of creativity on an interlacement of norm and experimentation.
