Abstract

In the 19th century novel, the thing has a definite function inside the grammar of the text. In Barthes’ words, it contributes to the ‘effet de réel’. On the contrary, in the course of the 20th century this aspect changes and the thing is more and more intended as something other from the simple perception of it. It becomes a sort of ‘objective correlative’ of ideas and feelings connected to the complexities of the character’s subjectivity. In Forster’s novels, Howards End and A Passage to India in particular, this aspect is clearly represented.
