Abstract

In every land they conquered, colonizers always used to build a miniature copy of their native country. This attitude to keep attached to their cultural and social habits is ironically dealt with by E.M. Forster in his novel A Passage to India (1924). The tragicomic lifestyle of men and women belonging to the English middle-class who moved to the subcontinent for the most different reasons is described in details. This essay shows how Forster, while creating unforgettable characters, throws light on some of the most relevant aspects of imperialism.
