Abstract

This paper aims to consider the role of silence in Bel-Ami as a specific feature of the main character Georges Duroy. Both psychologists and linguists recognize the function of silence in the field of communication; I have considered this kind of perspective to describe the effet de réel in the representation of dialogues in Guy de Maupassant’s novel. My analyses wants to demonstrate, through some examples in which Bel-Ami does not speak or does not answer to a question, how a parvenu can obtain big results just in understanding how to emulate who is above him. The silence underlines, in this way, the talent of Duroy on climbing the social ladder as well as his capability to seduce women.
