Abstract

In a dichotomous construction of solidity and evanescence, objects in Virginia Woolf’s novels play an important role, and domestic interior usually tells a story about “things”. This paper aims to explore, how in The Years, the private family home functions as a medium of memory, dreams, and in addition as a complex system across which different perspectives are present, whether they are psychological, political or aesthetic. Therefore the essay analyses how the plot, in conjunction with objects and authorial intrusions, is used to depict a liberation from the constraints of the Victorian ideals of family life and bourgeois habits.
