Abstract

We will try to understand why the IPA had such difficulty establishing itself in the United States. Starting with a brief analysis by Abercrombie (1982), we compared the practices of Americanists at the turn of the 20th century with the approach of the International Phonetic Association at the same time. We found that their methods and objectives did not match. The IPA has always aimed for a truly international alphabet, i.e., one that is completely standardised, while Americanists sought better notation for the native languages of America.
