Abstract

José Cardoso Pires (1925-1998) was often engaged in rewriting his own works. Such was also the fate of Dinossauro Excellentissimo, a satire of portuguese salazarism, which had two published versions with so many variants that it may be considered a case of ‘total rewriting’. A collation of the two versions allows us to enter into the writer’s workshop and understand his creative process, as well as his idea of writing as a constant work in progress. It also provides a clear example of a text considered as an object in time, a journey and an exploration of the different possibilities and parallel realities which only literature can afford.
