TRA ANTROPOLOGIA E DEMOGRAFIA STORICA: ILLEGITTIMITÃ, STRUTTURA SOCIALE E MUTAMENTO ETNICO IN UN VILLAGGIO DELLE ALPI ITALIANE

Abstract

Dopo una breve discussione dei rapporti tra antropologia e demografia
storica, questo articolo (basato su una ricerca sul terreno condotta ad Alagna Valsesia, una delle colonie walser del Piemonte) si concentra sul problema dell'illegittimità, che rappresenta il luogo d'intersezione tra la vicenda demografica di Alagna e i mutamenti avvenuti nella sua composizione etnica e nella sua struttura sociale.
La prima parte prende in esame le varie ipotesi e teorie generali formulate su questo argomento da storici e antropologi, mostrando come esse non riescano a spiegare soddisfacentemente gli alti livelli di illegittimità registrati ad Alagna tra la metà dell'800 e la seconda guerra mondiale. Grazie soprattutto all'impiego di metodi di analisi nominativa, un accurato studio storico-demografico permette invece di individuare un legame decisivo tra illegittimità, immigrazione e attività mineraria. Indicati i vantaggi e i limiti di un'analisi puramente storico-demografica, nella seconda parte l'articolo si volge più da vicino al lungo processo di trasformazione etnica, sociale ed economica che ha gradualmente cambiato il volto di Alagna, inserendo così l'illegittimità nel suo contesto sociale e culturale.

Summary

After briefly discussing the relationships between anthropology
and historical demography, this article (based on fieldwork conducted
in Alagna Valsesia, one of the German-speaking Walser colonies in the Piedmontese Alps) focuses on illegitimacy, which is one of the aspects of Alagna's demographic history that have been most critically affected by the changes occurred in its ethnic composition and social structure. The first part of the article considers the hypotheses and general theories of illegitimacy put forward by historians and anthropologists and shows that they are unable satisfactorily to account for the high levels of illegitimacy recorded in Alagna between the mid-nineteenth century and the Second World War.
On the other hand, a careful historical-demographic examination relying
on nominal methods of analysis brings to light a decisive link between illegitimacy, immigration and mining. Once both the advantages and the limitations of a purely historical-demographic approach have been indicated, the second part of the article places Alagnese illegitimacy in its social and cultural context through a more detailed analysis of the process of ethnic, social and economic change undergone by this Alpine village
