SVILUPPI MATEMATICI IN ANTROPQLOGIA: FORMALIZZAZIONE E ISOMORFISMO
Abstract
L' uso di strumenti matematici in antropologia può essere più o meno efficace secondo forientamento teorico e metodologico adottato. L'approccio olistico, tipico della tradizione antropologica, ha portato talvolta a sottovalutare l'impiego dell°analisi quantitativa. L'applicazione di procedure matematiche, però, è solo un aspetto del problema dell'isomorfismo, con cui si intende il grado di corrispondenza tra modelli usati dai ricercatori per rappresentare i fenomeni analizzati e la realtà studiata. Nel presente contributo sono esaminati modelli elaborati da Goody, Geoghegan, Thompson e Rappaport. Confrontando queste quattro applicazioni, emergono i rispettivi presupposti teorici e la loro influenza sulla scelta e sull'uso di differenti procedure di quantificazione e di formalizzazione matematica. Potenzialità e limiti dei modelli esaminati, infine, sono valutati in relazione ai fenomeni di morfogenesi che caratterizzano i sistemi socioculturali.
Summary
The effectiveness of mathematical instruments used in anthropology depends on the theoretical and methodological background. The holistic approach typical of the anthropological tradition has sometimes led to the use of quantitative analysis being underestimated. The application of mathematical procedures is only one of the aspects of isomorphism, c.e. the degree of consistency between the models used by the researchers to represent the analyzed phenomena and the observed reality. In this contribution models elaborated by Goody, Geoghegan, Thompsonand Rappaport are examined. By comparing the four approaches, the theoretical assumptions are highlighted along with their influence on the choice and the use of different formalizations and quantitative mathematical procedures. Lastly the examined models' potentialities and limits are evaluated in relation to morphogenesis phenomena characterizing the socio-cultural systems.
