COSE PROPRIE E COSE D'ALTRI. OGGETTI OCCIDENTALI, SINCRETISMI E PROCESSI ACCULTURATIVI FRA I MAKUXI DEL BRASILE

Abstract

Partendo da un'analisi storico-etnografica dei contatti stabilitisi nella regione Roraima (Brasile) tra gli indios Makuxi e i bianchi, l'autore analizza le forme di acculturazione nate nel campo della cultura materiale, e presenta vari casi di accettazione, rifiuto o reinterpretazione di oggetti di origine occidentale. Dallo studio dei casi di trasformazione di oggetti di origine esterna da
parte dei Makuxi l'autore fa derivare la proposta di usare la categoria del “sincretismo materiale”, definita come una risposta makuxi all'invasione degli oggetti occidentali e consistente nella creazione di nuovi oggetti attraverso l'utilizzazione di elementi e parti di oggetti di culture differenti. L'autore si sofferma in particolare sul processo di “ri-significazione” e propone un modello comprendente i rapporti tra materia, forma e funzione, per interpretare e ricostruire i processi di sincretismo materiale.

Summary

The author begins with an ethnographic and historical survey of contact in the Roraima region of Brazil between the Makuxi Indios and white men. He then analyzes the forms of acculturation that arose in the field of material culture and presents various cases of acceptance, rejection, or reinterpretation of objects of Western origin. Consideration of cases of Makuxi transformation of objects of outside origin leads the author to suggest adopting the category of “material syncretism”, which is defined as a Makuxi response to the invasion of Western objects and consists in the creation of new objects out of elements and parts of objects from other cultures. The author pays particular attention to the process of “re-signification” and proposes a model that embraces relations between matter, form, and function to interpret and reconstruct the process of material syncretism.
