About the Journal
Journal History
Annali di Botanica dates back to 1884 when Pietro Romualdo Pirotta, Professor in Botany at the University of Rome, founded the Journal under the name "Annuario del Regio Istituto Botanico di Roma" (Volumes I-X, 1885-1901), which was later changed in 1902 to Annali di Botanica [Ann. Peer Review Process
All submitted manuscripts are read by the Editors. All articles submitted to Annali di Botanica go through the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected on their own merit, by the Editorial Board.
After the first review made by Associate Editors only the papers that seem most likely to meet our editorial criteria are sent for formal review.
Those papers can be judged by the editors (Associate Editor) to be of insufficient general interest or otherwise inappropriate are rejected promptly without external review.
Manuscripts judged to be of potential interest to our readership are sent for formal review, typically to one or two reviewers of Ediorial Board. The editors then make a decision based on the reviewers' advice, from among several possibilities:
- Accept, with or without editorial revisions;
- Invite the authors to revise their manuscript to address specific concerns before a final decision is reached;
- Reject, but indicate to the authors that further work might justify a resubmission;
- Reject outright, typically on grounds of specialist interest, insufficient conceptual advance or major technical and/or interpretational problems.

Publication ethics and publication malpractice
Ensuring ethics in publication and quality of articles is a major aspect of both the editorial and peer-review process, lying within the responsibility of the Editor-in-chief of each journal. Plagiarism, fraudulent research or data manipulation, duplicate publication, authorship disputes and competing financial interests are examples of ethical issues that a journal scientific Editor must face during its work. Within the scientific community, it is necessary to agree upon standards of expected ethical behaviour for all parties involved in the publishing, namely the author, the editor, the peer reviewer and the publisher.
Annali di Botanica - Coenology and Plant Ecology, takes extremely seriously the issue about publication ethics and publication malpractice. Consequently, we accurately monitor the ethics of all papers submitted to our Journal, and we are committed to take all possible measures against any aspect of publication malpractice. All authors submitting their works to Annali di Botanica for publication as original articles attest that the submitted works represent their authors’ contributions and have not been copied or plagiarized in any part from other works. The authors acknowledge that they have disclosed all and any actual or potential conflicts of interest with their work or partial benefits associated with it. In the same manner, Annali di Botanica is committed to objective and fair double-blind peer-review of the paper submitted for publication, and to prevent any actual or potential conflict of interests between the editorial and review personnel, and the reviewed material. Any departures from the above-defined rules should be reported directly to the Editor-in-Chief who is unequivocally committed to providing swift resolutions to any of such type of problems.
Our policies on ethical principles follow the recommendations and guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) (http://www.publicationethics.org).
Conflict of Interest
A conflict of interest may exist when an author (or his or her institution), referee, or editorial board member has personal or financial relationships that may inappropriately influence their behavior. This conflict may exist even if the individual believes that such relationships do not influence him or her.
Journal management is very careful to handle situations of this kind (e.g., through the system of single-blind or double-blind anonymous referees), and authors may be asked to make a formal statement about it.
Articles involving human experimentation are not accepted
