Abstract

This paper gives a history of the United States banking system during the New Deal era (1933-1940). The history gives a fascinating account of the individuals involved and describes changes introduced to strengthen the nation's banks. Eminent economists are discussed, for example, Irving Fisher is quoted for arguing that there were more banks than competent banking personnel. The New Deal banking reforms are evaluated.
