The last three yeas have witnessed a series of crises, disappointments and setbacks that have made the pursuit of the economic, monetary and political union of the European Community increasingly difficult. The present work argues, however, that the problems which presently assail European integration, far from excusing new delays and tergiversations, make it essential to move sooner and faster than previously planned. The author confines analysis to the most anguishing monetary problems - world inflation and international monetary disorder - and shows how the creation of a European monetary area could facilitate their solution and thereby be of immense assistance in the final completion of the economic, monetary and political union of Europe.
