Abstract

This article contributes to the corpus of research that rethinks the question of money from a multidisciplinary perspective, which is recognised as essential for understanding contemporary monetary experiments and, indeed, the nature of money itself. Following the framework proposed by Gómez and Dini (2016), it uses data from a comprehensive empirical study conducted in Argentina to advance research on the origin and meaning of money. Through the analysis of Chipicos issued by an Argentine cooperative, this study explores the emerging social and economic dynamics, taking into account the links between money circulation and social reproduction. It also explores the sociological question of monetary ontology, which concerns the relationship between values and money. The analysis shows how grassroots currencies can influence social relations and offers a critical perspective on existing monetary theories, enriching the academic debate with contributions from philosophy, anthropology, and sociology.
