There is a paradox in the continuing strength of the US dollar at a time when the United States is running an ever-growing balance of payments deficit. The main reason for the strength of the dollar appears to be the massive capital flows into the United States, which may currently be over $100 billion annually. The author argues that these capital transactions are causing fundamental imbalances in the world's financial markets, thus threatening the future stability of the system.
