The work represents an in-depth analysis of employment and productive capacity in Italy. The author first looks at participation rates in the official statistics and international comparisons before considering other attempts to measure the labour force and the mechanisms which determine “irregular employment”. A possible interpretation of the Italian situation is then provided. Productive capacity development and micro-firms are then dealt with, as well as the time needed to catch up with European levels. Earnings levels and labour conditions are then compared and observations are made on the distributive shares.
