Abstract

The work is the second of two articles, the first of which was published under the title “The Mask of Government”, in which the author presents the results of his new inquires into the theory and calculation of the national income. The present work looks at the problem of finding a unit of measure for the purchasing power of money which will remain stable, and will therefore give precise meaning to its variations in successive periods. The author’s conclusion is that it is not possible to find such a satisfactory minimum common denominator of the purchasing power of several goods in different countries because of the disparities in the remuneration of labour which arise form the fact that labour cannot move freely in space.
