Further Notes on Marino as Chess Player. Ekphrasis and Didacticism in Canto XV of the Adone

Abstract

After having identified in some sections of the XV of the Adone the ancient institutes – literary and rhetorical – of descriptio and διδασκαλία, the article prolongs its survey by showing, in the same passage, both the refinement of multiple elocutive gradations all internal to the middle register, as well as a brilliant – although no longer current – combination of curiosity towards the new and of very solid interpenetration in the remote or proximate tradition.
