Abstract

The continuity of frequentation of the Via Aurelia even in the early medieval centuries has been the subject of a wide debate by researchers. Today the tendency is to believe that, despite the downgrading of the Consular Way compared to other routes (such as the Cornelia or the Cassia), it continued to be a valid alternative for connections with the southern Tuscia and in particular with the new papal foundation of LeopoliCencelle. In my research I aim to consider the value of the road not only as a wide - ranging axis of connection, but moreover as an indispensable point of reference which connected Rome and its suburbium. To this end, through an accurate work on the concerned documents, I have identified all the parish buildings and oratories along the Aurelia between Rome and the Campus Salinarum active between the 10th and 11th centuries. The results bear witness to a significant number of rural parishes, a mirror of a considerable complexity in the rural suburban settlement.
