The Latin Translation of The Theriac to Piso by Niccoló Da Reggio

Abstract

 Galen’s Theriac to Piso  is preserved by twelve Greek manuscripts, and received an Arabic translation in the 9th century, and a Latin translation by Niccolò da Reggio in the first part of the 14th century. The Latin translation  is incomplete and transmitted in two versions: one is longer than the other, and the shorter version may be earlier than Niccolò’s and done by Peter of Abano. This article presents and explores the Greek and Latin tradition, and reconstructs the relation between them. The Latin translation by Niccolò has been shown to be independent from the preserved Greek  manuscripts and probably based on several Greek manuscripts available in Southern Italy.
