Abstract
The article analyzes the scientific debate arosen between Marcello Malpighi and Giovan Battista Trionfetti about the possibility of ‘preformation’ in plants and living organisms, the existence of spontaneous generation and the meaning and usefullness of particular structures in plants, as ‘folia seminalia’.
