From myth to knowledge: public perception of native and alien praying mantids in Italy and its implications for conservation (Insecta: Mantodea)

Abstract

A sociological survey assessed public perception and knowledge of praying mantids in Italy (n = 222). Although mantids show higher popularity than most insects, persistent misconceptions rooted in cultural myths remain widespread. Increased awareness of invasive alien species reflects recent outreach efforts, yet significant gaps in understanding native species conservation persist. These findings highlight the importance of improving science communication and biodiversity awareness to support monitoring and management of native and alien mantid species.
