Abstract

Smart Cities represent a model of urban development based on the adoption of advanced technologies, but they face significant challenges such as social exclusion, the digital divide, and technological gentrification. These challenges make it urgent to seek innovative solutions that not only harness technological potential but also place people and their needs at the center, promoting greater social equity. Digital Twins and Territorial Digital Twins (TDT) emerge in this context as potentially effective tools for improving urban and territorial management, especially when designed to actively involve local communities in decision-making processes.

This paper, therefore, aims to analyze the main challenges of smart cities and explore the potential solutions offered by Digital Twins and Territorial Digital Twins. Through a review of existing literature and the presentation of case studies, it will be possible to understand whether and how these tools can contribute to reducing inequalities and creating more inclusive and sustainable cities and territories.
