Abstract

Why it is necessary (and convenient) not to consider Historical GIS as an ancillary sector in the Digital Humanities

In Italy, borrowing from a discussion that originated in Anglo-Saxon countries, there is an increasingly insistent discussion of Historical GIS (HGIS) as one of the minority components of the Digital Humanities (DH) "galaxy". The reasoning, for the Italian context, has been addressed, albeit with a certain delay and distinctly for disciplinary sectors, in some contributions and congresses and has seen the prevalence of a substantial acceptance of this thesis that pigeonholes HGIS as a mere ancillary component of the macro sector of Digital Humanities.

In this contribution, we will not argue the reasons that led these groups of scholars to support such a subjection of HGIS by the DH, but rather we will try to offer an alternative reading on the real convenience, for the purposes of a cognitive growth, of maintaining rather a disciplinary balance. An appeal that, by leveraging the scientific heterogeneity of scholars interested in Historical GIS (historians, geographers, architects, archaeologists, etc.), will create a space for common dialogue. Only in this way, i.e., through the union of different forces that individually remain partial and marginal in the use of HGIS, will it be possible to think about a real growth that allows an effective enrichment of geographical-historical-cartographic research based on the use of GIS.
