Taking inspiration from the examination of the essays collected in the recently published volume Orizzonti di cittadinanza. Per una storia delle circoscrizioni amministrative dell’Italia unita, the article reconstructs some features of modern European statehood at the turning point between the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth centuries. A particular attention is given to the role played by the public administration in the construction of a territory conceived as an exclusive space of the state jurisdiction and consequently organized on the ground of a system of circumscriptions functional to the agency of central governments. This system established itself through the partial dismantling of the previous ways of organizing the space produced by the territorial peripheries. However, in the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries – in harmony with the evolution of the state in a liberal and democratic sense – a new dialectic between state and local subjects about administrative circumscriptions was developed, and it is still in progress. In this sense, the history of administrative circumscriptions appears to
be a sort of open-ended story.

En s’inspirant de l’analyse des essayes collectés dans l’ouvrage Orizzonti di cittadinanza. Per una storia delle circoscrizioni amministrative dell’Italia unita, récemment paru, l’article retrace certains aspects du statut de l’État européen au tournant entre le Dix-huitième e le Dix-neuvième siècle. Une attention particulière concerne le rôle joué par l’administration publique dans la construction d’un territoire conçu comme un espace exclusif de la juridiction
de l’État et, par conséquence, organisé sur la base d’un système de circonscriptions fonctionnel à l’action du gouvernement central. Ce système s’établit à travers le partiel démantèlement des modes précédents d’organisation de l’espace, produits par les périphéries territoriales. Cependant, au cours du Dix-neuvième et du Vingtième siècle – en harmonie avec l’évolution de l’État en sens libéral et démocratique – une nouvelle dialectique entre l’État et les sujets locaux, par rapport aux circonscriptions administratives, se développe et est toujours en cours. Dans ce sens, l’histoire des circonscriptions administratives semble être une sorte d’histoire du final toujours ouvert.
