Dalle famiglie alle clientele

Abstract

In questo scritto vengono prese in esame le vicende politiche di un Comune della Calabria dalla fine dell'Ottocento al 1990. Due famiglie si contrappongono, all'origine, schierate intorno a figure di preti che lottano tra loro, aggregando intorno a sé e ai propri familiari alleati e sostenitori. E' da queste famiglie che discenderanno tutti i personaggi che avranno un ruolo importante o rappresentativo nelle istituzioni. Gli schieramenti che si costituiscono non sono fazioni né clientele, ma espressioni del gioco delle relazioni e degli scambi tra famiglie e raggruppamenti parentali. Nello scritto si esaminano la composizione dei gruppi e la natura degli stessi, le strategie per catturare il consenso, la comparsa dei mediatori che trasformeranno il gioco politico basato su logiche tutte interne alla parentela in una struttura di tipo clientelare.

The paper examines the political events of a township in Calabria from the end of the nineteenth century till 1990. Originally there were two contending families, arrayed around priests who disagreed among themselves, and they gathered allies and supporters around them and their relatives. The people who were to play important or representative institutional roles were all descendants of these two families. The alignments that were formed are not factions or patronage groups but expressions of the play of the relations and interchange between families and family groups. The paper considers the composition and nature of these groups, their strategies for winning support, and the appearance of mediators who transformed the game of politics from something wholly based on a logic of kinship into a patronage type of structure.
