Nel 1965 il professor Thomas Southcliffe Ashton ( 1889-1968 ) , che era da poco in pensione presso la London School of Economics , è stato invitato dagli studenti della Economic History Society dell'Università di Exeter ad essere il loro presidente. In 1965 Professor Thomas Southcliffe Ashton (1889-1968), who had recently retired from the London School of Economics, was invited by the students of the Economic History Society at University of Exeter to be their president. He came to Exeter on 29 April 1966 to deliver his presidential address in which he talked about four economic historians he had known: William Ashley, George Unwin, J.L. Hammond and R.H. Tawney. This paper was the result.
