Abstract

The Author, at the time young diplomat at the Press office of the Italian Foreign Ministry, makes a detailed account of the visit in the Soviet Union, in February 1960, by the President of the Republic, Giovanni Gronchi. The visit had created political tensions in Italy for the criticism of some catholic circles. Italian diplomacy did hope to find some political openings in Moscow on the Berlin question and, more generally, on Germany. But, at a reception at the Italian Embassy Mr. Kruscev clarified in a blunt way the Soviet way of thinking on the subject. In the account are quoted the exact words of Mr. Kruscev in his intervention. At the time, Kruscev seemed to believe that the Soviet Union would shortly became the first world power and did not accept any doubt about the ‘superiority’ of the communist system. Soviet position did bring a slowing down in the improvement of East-West relations. In the followings months the planned visit of General Eisenhower was cancelled and in August 1961 the Berlin Wall was built.L’Auteur, à l’époque jeune diplomate au Service de presse du Ministère des Affaires Étrangères, fait un récit assez détaillé du déroulement de la visite en Union Soviétique du Chef de l’État italien, Giovanni Gronchi, en février 1960. La visite avait créé quelques tensions politiques en Italie, à cause des critiques ouvertes d’une partie de la hiérarchie catholique. La diplomatie italienne espérait trouver quelques ouvertures, à Moscou, sur la question de Berlin et, plus en général, de l’Allemagne. M. Khrouchtchev se chargea d’enlever toute illusion à cet égard au Chef de l’État italien et à l’Occident. On retrouve dans le texte les mots exacts par lesquels le leader soviétique s’exprima sur ce sujet, en public, à l’occasion d’une réception à l’Ambassade d’Italie. À l’époque, M. Khrouchtchev imaginait que l’Union Soviétique serait rapidement devenue la première puissance mondiale et se disait convaincu de la supériorité du système communiste.
