Abstract

In this paper, some of the key problems in the contemporary debate regarding the definition of the concept of narrativity will be discussed. The aim is to demonstrate that, throughout his works, David Lynch develops a narrative style that is abstract and non-discursive, that is, devoid of the syntactic-semantic linearity that we naively attribute to narration. How to evaluate this concept of narration in a historical sense? In what sense, without this structur- al element, may Lynchean cinema be defined as ‘narrative’? What are the strategies through which such a narrative can be defined as non-discursive?
