Abstract

A work of propaganda by the French monarchy, l’Histoire des Neuf Roys Charles maintains an interest for 16th century specialists as a testament of the mood shared by contemporaries of the civil wars, above all Montaigne: a strong desire for order and stability announcing the triumphs of the absolutist state, as well as safeguarding, in the middle of the storm, the bases of civil humanism. A careful analysis of this text questions the widespread idea of a fundamentalist Catholic Belleforest, and more generally, reconsiders the real stakes of the so-called wars of religion. His social condition and the state of his career urge him to unite with the established order, against extremism of all kinds. This unexpected position results, in particular, from his formal adherence to the conciliation policy carried out at the time by the Queen and the Chancellor of the Hospital.
