The work analyses the current debate taking place in Italy regarding the reduction of working hours. The author notes that in the debate the objectives and the tools of employment policies are often confused. Several diverse examples are offered which seem to confirm that there is no precise solution to the issue a hand. “Generalised” reductions would lead to unexpected results, and thus it is advisable to let history run its corse by reducing hours as conditions permit.
