Dimension and structure of national collective labour agreements

The article deals with the systems of collective bargaining in Italy, Germany, France, and Spain: it analyses the history of bargaining, the functional and sectoral distribution of income, and the relationship between wages and sectoral value added, focusing on the number of workers involved in collective agreements and their respective wage shares of value added. We conclude with the proposal of two criteria for rewriting the matrix of national contracts in Italy: in terms of number of workers per contract and of contracted value added. The aim of the article is to build a quali-quantitative benchmark to reduce the number of Italian national sectoral collective labour contracts, with the intention of restoring the bargaining power to unions.
