This brief reply addresses Ackley and Spaventa’s criticisms of the author’s article “Some structural Aspects of the Southern Problem: The Complementarity of Emigration and Industrialization”. The author seeks to both clarify her initial argument and rebut the specific points raised by Ackley and Spaventa. It is argued that while there may be different evaluations regarding future development prospects in Italy, the speed at which the Northern industries are expanding the country’s exports and at the same time providing employment for Southern workers makes speculation about vaguer prospects appear quixotic.
